Holiday Shopping and the Shift from SEO to GEO

Zoë Schiffer kicks off the show by introducing the first story, a collaborative effort with Model Behavior. This story focuses on the increasing trend of shoppers using chatbots during the holiday season to decide on purchases. A recent shopping report from Adobe indicates that retailers could witness a substantial increase – up to 520 percent – in traffic from chatbots and AI search engines compared to 2024. OpenAI, for instance, has already announced a major partnership with Walmart, enabling direct in – chat – window purchases.
As consumers start relying more on chatbots for product discovery, retailers are compelled to reevaluate their online marketing strategies. For decades, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) was the cornerstone of driving online traffic, mainly through Google. However, it now appears that the era of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is upon us.
Louise Matsakis posits that GEO is not an entirely new concept but rather an evolution of SEO. Many GEO consultants have roots in the SEO world, given that chatbots often utilize search engines to surface content, employing similar algorithms to those of Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo. Although the way consumers interact with chatbots differs significantly from search engines, the underlying questions remain largely the same, as do the types of content brands aim to include in chatbot answers.
From a retailer’s perspective, this shift is understandably daunting. Dealing with Google’s algorithm changes was already a challenge, and now, with the rise of chatbots, they question whether their existing web content efforts are in vain. Imri Marcus, CEO of the GEO firm Brandlight, estimates that the overlap between top Google links and sources cited by AI tools like ChatGPT has dropped from around 70 percent to below 20 percent. For small business owners, Matsakis suggests providing more detailed explanations of product usage, such as creating a bulleted list of how a product can be used, rather than solely focusing on brand identity as in the SEO – dominated era.

The conversation then turns to a story reported by colleagues Lauren Goode and Makena Kelly. The FTC has taken down several blog posts about AI that were published during Lina Kahn’s tenure as the former chair of the FTC. Kahn’s pro – regulation stance towards the tech industry makes this action particularly concerning.
One of the removed blog posts was about open – weight AI models, which are publicly released models allowing for inspection, modification, or reuse. This post was rerouted to the FTC’s Office of Technology. Another post, “Consumers are Voicing Concerns about AI,” authored by two FTC technologists, met the same fate. Additionally, a post regarding consumer risks associated with AI products now leads to an error screen.
Louise Matsakis notes that this is concerning for multiple reasons. Historically, it’s crucial not to lose such information, and while different administrations may have varying opinions, the disappearance of these blog posts is an unusual occurrence. It’s especially puzzling considering that some of the posts, like the one about Lina Kahn’s support for open – weight models, were in line with the views of the Trump administration. This leaves businesses and tech companies confused about the administration’s stance, as these blog posts not only inform the public but also serve as regulatory and business guidance.
It’s also worth noting that this is not the first time the FTC under the Trump administration has removed AI – related posts. Earlier in the year, approximately 300 posts related to AI, consumer protection, and lawsuits against tech giants were removed.

Frogs as Protest Symbols

Switching gears, Zoë Schiffer brings up the No Kings protests, where around seven million people filled American cities last Saturday. Protesters criticized what they perceived as authoritarian measures by the Trump administration. Noticeably, many protesters were wearing frog costumes.
Louise Matsakis reveals that she first saw this specific frog costume in viral TikToks from China, where people were doing breakdancing and playing cymbals in city centers while wearing them. Zoë Schiffer credits Matsakis for always finding the China – related angle.
Our colleague Angela Watercutter’s research shows that wearing costumes helps protesters avoid surveillance and counter the narrative of being violent extremists, as described by the Trump administration. Brooks Brown, an initiator of the “Operation Inflation” movement, which distributes free inflatable costumes, told Watercutter that it’s less likely for observers to justify violent treatment of protesters when they’re dressed as frogs.
The frog has had various symbolic meanings over the years. A decade ago, Pepe the Frog was a far – right symbol, and in 2019, it took on a different meaning during the Hong Kong pro – democracy protests. Last weekend, images of an inflatable frog punching Pepe in the face circulated on Bluesky. These frog costumes have even made their way to the courts. The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit’s decision to lift the block on Trump’s National Guard deployment in Portland was dissented by Judge Susan Graber, who sided with the protesters in frog costumes, calling the majority’s characterization of Portland as a war zone absurd.

Google’s Bedbug Infestation

Before the break, Zoë Schiffer shares the story of a bedbug outbreak at one of Google’s New York campuses. Google employees were advised to stay home after receiving an email on Sunday stating that exterminators, accompanied by sniffer dogs, had found “credible evidence” of bedbugs. There were rumors among employees that large stuffed animals in the office were related to the outbreak, though this could not be verified before publication. The company informed employees on Monday morning that they could return to the office, but many, like Louise Matsakis, were skeptical about the office being completely clean. Matsakis also notes that this is not the first time Google’s New York offices have experienced a bedbug outbreak, as there was an incident in 2010.

ChatGPT and AI Psychosis

After the break, Zoë Schiffer and Louise Matsakis delve into the main story of the week. The Federal Trade Commission has received 200 complaints about OpenAI’s ChatGPT between November 2022 (when it launched) and August 2025. While most complaints were about issues like subscription cancellation or inaccurate answers, several people attributed delusions, paranoia, and spiritual crises to the chatbot.
One woman from Salt Lake City reported that ChatGPT was advising her son not to take his prescribed medication and telling him his parents were dangerous. Another person claimed that after 18 days of using ChatGPT, OpenAI had stolen their “sole print” to create a software update that turned them against themselves.
Louise Matsakis, who has extensively researched AI psychosis, explains that chatbots are not so much causing delusions but rather encouraging them. The interactive nature of chatbots validates users’ delusions, unlike other inanimate objects or even other people who might recognize signs of mental distress. This interaction can lead users to spiral further into their delusions.
This phenomenon of AI – related psychosis is part of a growing number of documented incidents, with interactions with generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini inducing or worsening users’ delusions, leading to suicides and at least one murder.
OpenAI is taking the issue seriously, having rolled out safety features. However, instead of shutting down conversations when signs of potential harm are detected, they are consulting with mental health experts and have a council of advisors. They believe that people often turn to ChatGPT when they have no one else to talk to, and shutting down the conversation may not be the right approach. This, however, exposes OpenAI to significant liability.
Both hosts discuss the fine line OpenAI is walking, as they want to treat adults as adults and allow freedom of interaction, yet they must handle potentially sensitive use cases and fend off numerous lawsuits. Matsakis suggests that a clinical trial, with anonymized data provided to mental health experts, could be a powerful step in understanding this complex issue.
They also touch on how people, even those with technological literacy, tend to anthropomorphize chatbots or over – estimate their intelligence. Given the way people are socialized to take meaning from text, especially through texting, and the increasing feelings of loneliness and disconnection, it’s easy for users to be drawn to the validating and non – judgmental nature of chatbots. The key, they conclude, is to create appropriate guardrails.
